Africa Yoga Journey is a place to explore invigorating, Vinyasa Flow yoga and FUN, community and the playfulness of Africa Acro Yoga. Africa Yoga Journey is a place to experience the happiness of yoga!
Lois did her teacher training at the beginning 2007 and qualified through Yoga Vidya Gurukul, India through Living Yoga as the original teachers. Since then she has taught at many styles of yoga classes.
"Our own bodies are the biggest teachers" says Lois. "Yoga is so much more than postures done to boost mobility, strength and tone. Yoga is a path, a way of life, a way you connect to your life and finding balance within it. Yoga is a gateway to so much more!"
Many phenomenal teachers have inspired her, and she has done workshops and classes with international teachers in Vinyasa Flow, Jivamukti, AcroYoga, Anusara and Ashtanga Yoga. She has experienced international, inspirational teachers like Seane Corn, David Life, Sharon Gannon, Simon Borg-Oliver, Jim Harrington, Olivier David, Jules Febre, Patrick Creelman, Michael Gannon, Arianne Om, Danya Davis and her very special friend Marissa Dana."
"My life has dramatically been transformed by yoga " says Lois" I am blessed with this incredible gift of teaching that enables me to share my passion with those who attend our classes, workshops, play groups and Jams."
"Yoga is a journey, that changes, helps us grow and ignites a connection to a higher state of consciousness, when you allow it to." says Lois
She currently teaches Vinyasa flow in a challenging but fun, happy approach, and has since 2009 delved into the exhilarating skill and playfulness of AcroYoga.
In 2009 Lois discovered AcroYoga the combination of the ancient wisdom of yoga, the fun and dynamics of acrobatics and the gentle embrace and loving kindness of Thai massage. Her first experience of Acro Yoga was a workshop run by Olivier David. "It was the most liberating experience I had ever encountered and became hooked immediately" says Lois. "It was a combination of releasing fear and inducing happiness in such a magnificent way and building a relationship of trust and support in a special way"
Since 2009 Lois has attended many workshops and play groups in AcroYoga and in 2011 started building the Acro yoga community by hosting and running Africa Acro Yoga Play groups and workshops with her friend (and cousin) and special Yogi Ben Levin. In 2016 they both Qualified as AYFit teachers in Portland, Oregan, USA and are accredited through AcroYoga interntaional.
Lois and Ben are continuing to grow the Acro Yoga community, under the guidance and support of a special friend and certified AcroYoga teacher Marissa Dana. "We play in a way that is safe yet playful" says Lois. The Play groups and workshops were held @ Africa Yoga Journey and now also shared with many yoga studios including Care Yoga run by Carey Abercombie; Earth Yoga run by Izelle Steencamp and Full Circle Charity run by Samantha Dean and Bianca Volans and ISHTA school of Yoga founded by Wendy Wood, Go Yoga Jozi founder Sally Flanagan-Gutjhar, ZEN hot Yoga with co owners Conrad Smit and Mellissa Berry, Gurucat by special owner Kim Mazbow, Inn Yoga with owner Patrycja Mochocka and embarked on an Aerial/Acro Yoga workshop @ Aerial yoga’s vertical Vixen studio with co owner Carly Bowden. We have been blessed by so much support and Love by these lovely teachers and yogis and wish to continue sharing Africa Acro yoga with as many studios and yogis as we can. It is our aim to keep growing our Kula (family ) as we keep spreading the AcroYoga Love.
Please email Lois if you'd like to host an AcroYoga playgroup or workshop at your studio.
Africa Acro Yoga has been recognized as a community leader by AcroYoga International and is hounoured to be an AcroYoga JAMbassador programme (www.acroyoga.org). " We are the first in South Africa to be a part of AcroYoga international" says Lois "it is a huge honour"
The "Codfather Village" in Morningsdie, (off Rivonia Road) Sandton, Johannesburg (now temporarily closed down) was the home to Africa Yoga Journey. We are always open new spaces to share Yoga and AcroYoga. We ravel to different studios and spaces spreading the Love, and are regulars once a moth at the Vegan Market at Pirates Sports Club, says Lois.
Lois' connection, intuition and understanding of the human body, mind and self makes her classes not just another yoga class, but ignites love for the practise as an exciting experience.
Indulge yourself and meet Lois and Ben. It is an experience you are sure to Love.
Vinyasa yoga, in which movement is synchronized to the breath, is a term that covers a broad range of yoga classes. This style is sometimes also called flow yoga, because of the smooth way that the poses run together and become like a dance. The breath becomes an important component because the teacher will instruct you to move from one pose to the next on an inhale or an exhale. Vinyasa is translated from Sanskrit as meaning "connection".
In terms of yoga asana, we can interpret this as a connection between movement and breath.
The classes are taught in the traditional language of Sanskrit (ancient Hindu text) with follow able English translations and very specific directions to help your practice flow.
A sun salutation sequence is an example of a more basic Vinyasa, compromising a movement from downward dog, through plank , through chaturanga (push up position) to upward facing dog. Each movement in the series is done on an inhalation or an exhalation. Lois’ understanding of the human body and anatomy has helped her carefully plan sequences that look after the body’s natural movement state and strengthen all areas of the body giving options for different body types, injuries and day to day practice with each class uniquely catered for on the day.
Private sessions are also available. Contact Lois for more information.
What to Expect
This style allows for a lot of variety, but will almost certainly include sun salutations. Expect movement, strength and mobility not just stretching. Whether the class is fast or slow, it includes om chanting, and is very alignment-oriented but not monotonous. The class ends in Savasana (yoga sleep) a form of relaxation with added benefits of some form of Thai massage. (Taken from Acro Yoga see below)
What Does “Go Through Your Vinyasa" Mean?
When Vinyasa is used as a noun, it describes a series of three poses that are done as part of a sun salutation sequence. When the teacher says, "go through the Vinyasa at your own pace", she means do plank, chaturanga, and upward facing dog.
Is Vinyasa Yoga for You?
Vinyasa’s strength is in its diversity. There is no single philosophy, rulebook, or sequence that teachers must follow, so there is a lot of room for individual personalities and quirks to come through. Lois is a great believer of humour and believes smiling and laughing is as much part of the practice of yoga as the asanas (postures) and pranayama (breath)
What is Acro Yoga
AcroYoga blends the wisdom of yoga, the dynamic power of acrobatics, and the loving kindness of healing arts. These three lineages form the foundation of a practice that cultivates trust, playfulness, and community. Jenny Sauer-Klein and Jason Nemer co-founded the practice in 2003, which has since touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of people world-wide.
Lois and Ben from Africa Yoga Journey, started the Africa Acro Yoga community play groups in 2011. Their playful and kind natures are infectious and will have you laughing, relaxing and flying in no time
Let go of your fears, trust and have lots of FUN!
What is involved
There are three primary roles in an Acro-yoga practice: base, flyer, and spotter.
Base – this is the individual who has the most points of contact with the ground. Often this person is lying on the ground with the entire back torso in full contact.
Flyer – this is the individual who has the ability to fly i.e elevate themselves by using and working together with the base. Initially the flyer surrenders and as the practice advances the role of the flyer becomes more proactive as transitions and acrobatic elements come into play.
Spotter – this is arguably the most important person/s involved. This person watches out proactively for the safety of the base and flyer. Being fully aware and ready to catch, adjust or help in the moment to ensure the safety of all involved.
Who can do Acro Yoga?
AcroYoga is for any reasonably strong yogi or adventure junkie wishing to experience the fun, liberation and community that is acro yoga. Each session caters for the beginner, and intermediate helping each to enjoy the practise at their level and for all to learn new tricks and work together.
What does this mean: Recognition and affiliation by AcroYoga as a community leader in AcroYoga - always safety first. www.acroyoga.org
